Do I need to apply for it?
No. The 13th pension is paid automatically by your compensation office (Ausgleichskasse / caisse de compensation). If you are already receiving an AHV pension, you will receive a written notification in 2026 explaining how your payment has been calculated. No action is required on your part.
Does it affect my supplementary benefits (Ergänzungsleistungen)?
No. The 13th AHV pension does not reduce or cancel supplementary benefits. It is treated as an additional payment and does not affect the calculation of EL entitlement.
What if I retired mid-year in 2026?
You are entitled to the 13th pension as long as you are receiving an AHV old-age pension in December 2026. The amount will be calculated as one-twelfth of your total monthly pensions paid across the year — so if you retired in July, only the months from July to December are included in the calculation.
Does it apply to disability (IV) or survivor's pensions?
No. The 13th pension applies only to AHV old-age pensions. Disability pensions (IV) and survivor's pensions (widow's / widower's pensions) continue to be paid 12 times a year and are not included.
Is it taxable?
Yes. The 13th AHV pension is treated as regular pension income and is subject to income tax in the same way as your other monthly payments.
What if the pensioner dies before December?
Entitlement to the 13th pension requires the recipient to be drawing an AHV old-age pension in December of the relevant year. If a pensioner dies before December, there is no entitlement to the 13th pension for that year. Heirs are not entitled to it.
