Assumptions & how scores work

All scores are based on a single adult profile. Tax burden uses a gross income of CHF 100,000/year — adjust your expectations up or down if your income differs significantly. Rent is the average for a 3.5-room apartment. Scores are relative rankings within this dataset of 104 municipalities — a score of 100 means best in dataset, not perfect.

🏦 Low taxes Effective income tax burden in CHF for a single adult earning CHF 100k gross/year, including federal, cantonal, and municipal tax. Lower = higher score.
🏠 Affordable rent Average monthly rent for a 3.5-room apartment (approx. 2 bedrooms). Source: FSO structural rent survey 2024. Lower rent = higher score.
🚆 Transport Public transport quality class (ARE ÖV-Güteklassen). Class A = intercity rail every 15 min or better. Class F = bus once per hour or less. Better connections = higher score.
🎓 Schools Composite score based on number of schools per capita, proximity to a Gymnasium (upper secondary), and access to vocational training. Public schooling in Switzerland is free and high quality.
🏔 Nature & outdoors Access to lakes, forests, mountains, and open landscape. Based on ARE recreation accessibility index and elevation. Higher = more outdoor activity options on your doorstep.
🏙 City proximity Travel time in minutes by public transport to the nearest major city centre (Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Lausanne, Lucerne, St. Gallen). Under 10 minutes scores near 100.
🌍 Expat-friendly Proportion of foreign residents in the municipality. A higher share generally signals a more international community, greater English language presence, and more diverse services. Source: FSO 2024.
